HOWTO: Patch Windows XP Service Pack 1 to work with Outlook 2003 for Link2Exchange

Document: Q1240

Overview:

Many users prefer not to upgrade their PCs to Windows XP Service Pack 2 because it includes and enables firewall software which can cause a loss of connectivity if not properly configured. For those users, Microsoft has made a patch available which will enable Windows XP Service Pack 1 to work with Link2Exchange's service.

To install this patch, follow the instructions below.

Procedure:

  1. Click here to go to Microsoft's download page for this patch.
  2. Click Download (on the top-righthand side of the screen).
  3. Click Save.
  4. Click Desktop (on the left) then click Save.
  5. Right click on the file named Q331320_WXP_SP2_x86_ENU.exe on your Desktop and scan it for viruses (if you have a virus scanner). True, this software is from Microsoft and is almost certainly safe but you shouldn't take any chances.
  6. Double-click the file named Q331320_WXP_SP2_x86_ENU.exe on your Desktop.
  7. On the Welcome screen, click Next.
  8. Accept the Licence Agreement then click Next (or Install or Finish, depending on what it says).
  9. The software patches will now install. You should reboot your PC once they're completed. After that, your Outlook 2003 client will be able to connect to Link2Exchange's mail server.
