HOWTO: Export your email and address book from Eudora 6.x in order to import it into your Link2Exchange account

Document: Q1230

Overview:

Outlook 2002 and 2003 do not support direct import of Qualcomm Eudora 6.x e-mail messages and address books. However, you can import your data into Microsoft Outlook Express and then import the data from Outlook Express into Outlook.

The following procedures require that you first import your data into Outlook Express, which is included with Microsoft Windows® and Microsoft Internet Explorer. After your data is in Outlook Express, you can import the e-mail messages and address book into Outlook.

Important Attachments are lost during the transfer procedure because Outlook doesn't use the same method to save attachments as Eudora.

Procedure:

Import Eudora 6.x e-mail messages into Outlook Express so they can be imported into Outlook later

  1. Start Outlook Express, not Outlook. Outlook Express comes standard with Windows and must be used as an intermediary for the transfer of email from Eudora to Outlook.

    1. Note  If you removed all menu links to Outlook Express, or you cannot find a link for Outlook Express, click My Computer, and then browse to C:\Program Files\Outlook Express. Double-click msimn.exe.

  2. Click File->Import then click Messages. The Outlook Express Import Wizard will open.

  3. Click Eudora Pro or Light (through v3.0).

  4. Click Next.

    1. If your Eudora data is not found automatically, click Browse then navigate to the correct folder.
Note  The most likely locations for your Eudora mail include c:\Program Files\Qualcomm\Eudora, c:\Program Files\Qualcomm\Eudora Mail\, or c:\Documents And Settings\user name\Application Data\Qualcomm\Eudora. (where user name is the username you log into Windows with.)

  5. Click Next.

  6. Select All Folders then click Next.
Import the Eudora 6.x address book into Outlook Express
  1. In Outlook Express, click File->Import then click Other Address Book. The Address Book Import Tool will open.

  2. Click Eudora Pro or Light Address Book (through v3.0) then click Import.
    1. Your address book should be detected automatically. If it is not found, click Yes then navigate to where your Eudora address book is saved on your hard disk just as you did above for your Eudora mail.

Import Outlook Express e-mail and addresses into Outlook
  1. In Outlook, click File->Import and Export. The Import and Export Wizard will open.

  2. From the list, click Import Internet Mail and Addresses then click Next.

  3. From the list, click Outlook Express 4.x, 5.x, 6.x.

  4. Make sure that the Import Mail and Import Address book check boxes are checked.

  5. Click Next.

  6. Select the option for the action that you want Outlook to take for duplicate items. If in doubt, select Allow duplicates. You can sort through them later.

  7. Click Finish. The Import Summary dialog box will provide details on how many messages and addresses were successfully imported.
