Explanation of mail routing options for Link2Exchange Business accounts
Document: Q1281
Overview:
Business customers may choose to host their e-mail domain at Link2Exchange in one of the ways listed below. Depending on the type of domain setup, the user must configure their domain accordingly to have their e-mail sent to the Link2Exchange servers.
- FULL CONTROL: The domain’s DNS is hosted by Link2Exchange. We will control the DNS and e-mail for the domain.
- EMAIL CONTROL: The domain is hosted by another service provider and Link2Exchange will still control (ie be authoritative for) the e-mail for all users on the domain.
- NO CONTROL: The domain may is not actually hosted at Link2Exchange at all. The customer forwards e-mail from the real mail server for the domain to the Link2Exchange servers for each user on the Link2Exchange server. This option is only used when the customer wants to host some, but not all, of the e-mail on their domain at Link2Exchange.
Procedure:
- "FULL CONTROL" domain users only:
- User responsibilities:
- The user must change whois information at their domain registrar to point to ns1.link2exchange.com and ns2.link2exchange.com
- The user must notify Link2Exchange support (support@link2exchange.com) that the domain should be configured to include DNS service (if it wasn't originally configured with it).
- Link2Exchange admin/support responsibilities:
- Link2Exchange must add the DNS service to the account, if not already there.
- Link2Exchange must configure the appropriate MX records on the user’s domain and configure the anti-spam/anti-virus service, if applicable.
- This varies based on whether the domain has anti-spam/anti-virus configured on it.
- "E-MAIL CONTROL" domain users only:
- User responsibilities:
- The user must change MX records to point to Link2Exchange servers.
- The user does not have to notify Link2Exchange support.
- Link2Exchange admin/support responsibilities:
- Link2Exchange must configure the anti-spam/anti-virus service, if applicable.
- "NO CONTROL" domain users only:
- User responsibilities:
- The user must notify Link2Exchange Support (support@link2exchange.com) to ensure that the domain is set up as non-authoritative on our server.
- The user must forward mail to each account on the Link2Exchange server from the actual, authoritative account on the real mail server using a specially-crafted forwarding address. For details, see Forwarding e-mail to your non-authoritative Link2Exchange Business account
- Link2Exchange admin/support responsibilities:
- Link2Exchange must configure the domain so that e-mail sent from the Link2Exchange servers will reach all users on the domain, not just the users hosted at Link2Exchange. To do this, Link2Exchage must make the domain "non-authoritative" on our servers. By making it non-authoritative, any mail sent to an address not on our servers will automatically be forwarded to the authoritative (ie real) mail server for that domain.
- Link2Exchange must re-configure the anti-spam/anti-virus service to work with the forwarding address @server.name, if applicable.
