Configuring Outlook 2003 for Microsoft Windows
Document: Q1115
Overview:If you do not currently have Outlook 2003, you can download it from Link2Exchange by going to http://www.link2exchange.com/downloads You will be prompted for a username/password, this will be your email address with us and the password to your email account.
Microsoft Outlook 2003 running on Windows Vista, Windows 2003 or Windows XP with Service Pack 1 (and a special patch linked below under 'Related Documents') or Service Pack 2 or later can use RPC over SSL to avoid having to create a VPN connection before logging into Outlook. If Windows XP isn't currently updated to Service Pack 2, you can download it at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=049c9dbe-3b8e-4f30-8245-9e368d3cdb5a&displaylang=en. Link2Exchange offers no warranty expressed or implied regarding Windows updates and cannot offer support on their installation beyond this link to their site.
No version of Windows prior to XP supports this method of connection. (Windows Server 2003, however, does support it, as well.) The primary benefit of this connection method is that it's easier to configure and won't require you to log into your VPN client before you open Outlook.
Procedure:*NOTE* Before you start, enter your email address in the customize box above, this will modify the article to have the correct server information for your account.
Creating an Exchange Account Using RPC over HTTPs
- Click Start->Control Panel in your Windows XP start menu.
- If you are using Category View (it says “Pick a Category…” on a blue background) then click User Accounts and then Mail.
- If you are using Classic View (a bunch of icons appear on a white background) then double-click Mail.
- Click Show Profiles.
- Click Add. *NOTE*If you are setting up your domain with Link2Exchange and it is configured in Outlook for a previous a service provider do not delete that Profile from the Mail settings in the Control Panel until you have connected with your Link2Exchange account.
- Type L2E and click OK.
- Select “Add a new e-mail account” and click Next.
- Select “Microsoft Exchange Server” and click Next.
- Add the settings for your account:
- In the Microsoft Exchange Server box, type server.name

- Type your e-mail address (you@yourdomain.com) in the Username Box.

NOTE: The dialog will search for several minutes before giving a connection error message. Be patient! Ignore that error and continue on. If it prompts you to enter in your username and password, just click Cancel. If it leaves you on a screen where all you can do is click OK, then click OK and you'll end up on a screen with four tabs (one of them named 'Connection').
- Add the following advanced settings:
- Click the connection tab and place a check in the box next to “Connect to my Exchange mailbox using HTTP”.
- Click the button Exchange Proxy Settings…
- In the box “Use this URL to connect…” type in mail.exmx.net
- Place a check in the boxes “Connect using SSL Only” and “Mutually authentication when connecting to my proxy server for Exchange.
- In the “Principal name for proxy server” type msstd:mail.exmx.net
- Check the box “On fast networks, connecting use http first, then connect using TCP/IP."
- In the drop down menu under “Proxy authentication settings,” select Basic Authentication.
- Click OK and then OK again to return to the “Exchange Server Settings” screen and click the Next button.
