Daylight Savings Time
Changes Effective March 11, 2007
How will the changes in DST affect you? Most
computers and electronic devices are programmed to recognize Daylight Savings
Time (DST). However, with this change occurring 3 weeks early in many parts of
the country this year many devices will display the incorrect time after this
date unless proactive measures are taken. This change affects Windows, Outlook,
Entourage, and mobile devices such as Windows Mobile5, Blackberry, Good Mobile
Messaging, PocketPC, SmartPhone, etc.
Our Systems Have Been Updated: To comply with the
DST changes from US Congress and Microsoft, we have applied the updates to all
of our servers to correct for the new DST dates.
How do you prepare for this change? You must do the
following immediately: |
| 1. |
Through Microsoft Windows install the necessary updates
for your version of Windows. |
| 2. |
Contact your mobile carrier to ask how to obtain any
available update for DST. |
| 3. |
Download and run the Outlook Update tool to help correct
recurring calendar items. Please note that this does NOT fix all calendar
items such as individual meetings. |
| 4. |
Review all of your calendar entries between March 11-31
& October 28-November 4 and change the item start/end times to the correct
times and insert into the subject of every item the correct
time.
IMPORTANT NOTE: If you open or modify a fixed calendar item
from a mobile device that has not been patched the item will likely revert back
to the wrong time when DST begins. It is very important to update all
devices that access your calendar and manually edit each item to include the
correct time in the subject. |
|
Affected Systems and Most Mobile Devices: |
 |
Microsoft Outlook 2003, 2002, XP, 2000, 98, or 97, and
Entourage 2004 |
 |
BlackBerry Device Software Versions 4.1.x, 4.02.x,
4.0.0.x (except 4.1.0.375, 4.1.0.377 and 4.1.0.378) |
 |
BlackBerry Connect users: Blackberry Connect is
dependant on the time provided by the operating system on which it
resides |
 |
Good Mobile Messaging client software version 4.9.1 or
earlier |
 |
Palm Treo, Nokia E61/E62, and any other devices that
access your Calendar |
 |
Windows PocketPC's and SmartPhones |
|
Blackberry: Most BlackBerry devices need the DST
update. From your handheld, using your Blackberry web browser go to: www.BlackBerry.com/dst2007 and follow
the instructions to download and install the necessary patch.
Suggestion: Send yourself an email with the above link so that
you can click on it from your BlackBerry to avoid typing it
in.
Entourage Users: |
 |
Entourage clients updated with 11.3.3 Update will work
fine however problems will occur when they interact with clients not updated
with DST 2007 changes. |
 |
Entourage 2004 11.3.3 supports DST changes by leveraging
the OS. If you use this version (11.3.3 or newer) and a version of the OS that
supports the DST changes (currently 10.4.6+), you are fine. |
 |
If you use Entourage 11.3.3 with an older version of the
OS (10.4.5-) that doesn't support the DST rules, then the DST change will
result in an inaccurate calendar. |

FAQ's: |
| Q: |
My version of XP synchronizes to an internet-based time
server. Will this solve the problem? |
| A: |
No. The reason for this problem is because of the
way Outlook records meeting times. Reoccurring meetings in Outlook are stored
in Coordinated Universal Time or UTC. This is basically GMT. The meetings do
not contain time zone information which is why meeting times are ahead one hour
during the extended DST period, three weeks in March, and behind one hour
during the one week in November. The tool does not update individual meeting
times also because individual meetings are stored differently than reoccurring
meetings. These will need to be updated manually. |
Q: |
Should I upgrade to outlook 2007? Would that solve the
issue? |
| A: |
Yes. Outlook 2007 will not be affected by
this. |
